Google today will today roll out its Google Assistant’s Interpreter Mode to help translate users’ conversation in real-time. To access it, you’ll need a smartphone or tablet with the Google Assistant.
The feature includes Apple’s iPhone as well, though you’ll need to download the Google Assistant iOS app to use it.
According to Google, the interpreter mode will work with 44 languages and can be invoked by saying commands like “Hey Google, help me speak Thai” or “Hey Google, be my German translator.”
Once the interpreter mode is engaged, the Assistant will translate your speech and read it out loud. On phone screens, the Assistant is able to offer up Smart Replies that can speed up the conversation by letting you respond without having to speak.
Also, if you’re in a quieter environment and can’t talk, you can type instead of talking, and the translations will appear on your screen in the same as they would if spoken out loud.
Interpreter mode was previously only available on Google Home smart speakers and displays. It’ll start rolling out inside the iOS and Android Google Assistant smartphone apps from today.
