Google is adding a kid-friendly section to the Play Store with apps it says have been reviewed and rated highly by teachers to help children learn during COVID-19 lockdown.
The tech giant has also ensured that the apps meet its quality standards, and you’ll see reasons why teachers gave them their thumbs up.
You might spot a “teacher-approved” badge on an app when you search the Play Store or see a selection of such software in the Kids tab.
Meanwhile, Google Play Pass subscribers can see some apps to which teachers have given their stamp of approval in the “Apps and games for kids” section.
The Kids tab has been in the works for a while, according to Google, and it’s adding the feature a little earlier than it intended “because parents who have tried it out told us that it’s been helpful, especially now with their kids home from school and spending more time with screens.”
That, of course, is due to schools around the world shutting their doors for now to limit the spread of COVID-19.
However, the rush to add the Kids tab — which is rolling out across the US in the coming days and elsewhere in the coming months — means that some apps intended for inclusion are missing. That said, Google claims it’s “adding new content as quickly as possible.”
It’s not always easy for parents to figure out which apps are suitable for their kids, so this is a welcome move by Google. It’s a little odd the Play Store didn’t already have such a section, but its inclusion is a positive step.
