Nigeria’s vibrant technology ecosystem is set to take center stage in 2025 as the country hosts GITEX Africa, the premier tech event on the continent. This landmark event follows a successful 2024 edition in Marrakech, Morocco, where a number of Nigerian startups made their mark, highlighting the country’s burgeoning tech scene.
The announcement, made on Thursday afternoon, follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), the organizers of GITEX. While specific dates are yet to be confirmed, TechCabal has learned that the event is expected to take place in September 2025, with Lagos and Abuja serving as the host cities.
This move by GITEX Africa to Nigeria not only recognizes the country’s burgeoning tech scene but also its position as Africa’s most populous nation with a rapidly growing digital economy. The event will serve as a platform for Nigerian tech companies and startups to showcase their innovations to a global audience, fostering partnerships, attracting investment, and accelerating the growth of the sector.
Building on the momentum of GITEX Africa 2024, where nearly 100 Nigerian startups were invited to participate, next year’s event promises to be even bigger and more impactful. In 2024, Nigerian companies such as Famasi Africa, Akowe, Bus54, Flowmono, ForisLabs, Genesis360, and Alusoft Technologies Ltd. made significant contributions to the event, showcasing a diverse range of innovative solutions in healthcare, education, fintech, and logistics.
The decision to host GITEX Africa in Nigeria is seen as a strategic move to further promote the country’s technology ecosystem. With a focus on showcasing local talent and solutions, the event is expected to drive technological advancement, economic diversification, and job creation in the region.
Trixie LohMirmand, Managing Director of DWTC, expressed enthusiasm about tailoring the event to align with Nigeria’s national strategy, emphasizing a unique formula that caters to the specific needs and opportunities within the country’s tech landscape.
Kachifu Inuwa, Director General of NITDA, highlighted President Tinubu’s emphasis on economic diversification and the importance of facilitating trade and collaboration in the tech sector. He underscored the government’s commitment to supporting the growth of the tech industry and leveraging events like GITEX Africa to promote Nigeria’s digital potential.
With GITEX Africa 2025 on the horizon, the Nigerian tech ecosystem is poised for a significant boost in visibility, investment, and growth. Building on the success of its 2024 edition, this event represents a pivotal moment for the country’s technology sector, offering a platform to showcase its innovation to the world and solidify its position as a leading player in the African tech landscape.
