The Government of Ghana has announced plans to launch an app that will enable its citizens to buy electricity from their phones.
Consequently, the initiative will ensure that Ghanaians under the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will not have to visit sales points to get prepaid credit.
Prior to the announcement of the app by the Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia yesterday, Ghanaians have lamented the difficulties involved with getting prepaid credit at dusk. Many have raised security or reliability concerns.
Hence, the news has come as a relief for most Ghanaians.
Ghana generates more electricity than it actually needs. The problem, which costs the country USD 450 Mn for the power it does not use. This has made the country resort to exporting electricity to Mali by 2023.
Interestingly, though, Ghana did not have enough power about 5 years ago.
Rolling out the mobile app is seen as a move to foster the inclusion of more customers into Ghana’s electrification play.
The idea lies in the fact that if buying electricity from the luxury of a phone app makes the process easier, it will encourage more people to consume more electricity.
Also, the process will encourage Ghanaians to buy power for one another as anyone can initiate a transaction from anywhere, for anyone, thus more power is consumed.
The government also says that the plan is in line with the government’s efforts to curb inefficiencies and corruption plaguing the power system.
