Google has announced it is introducing several updates to Search to make it easier for users to find helpful content mad. The goal is to reduce the amount of low-quality or duplicate content that ranks high in search results.
The new update is targeted specially on “SEO-first” content, which according to the blog post, “has been created primarily for ranking on search engines” rather than human-first content.
Past research has shown that search updates always enhance the outcomes that users receive when looking for content like online educational resources, as well as arts and entertainment, retail, and tech-related information.
Google notes, “If you search for information about a new movie, you might have previously encountered articles that aggregated reviews from other sites without adding perspectives beyond what’s available elsewhere on the web. This isn’t very helpful if you’re expecting to read something new. With this update, you’ll see more results with unique information, so you’re more likely to read something you haven’t seen before.”
Now that the company is introducing new updates this should limit the amount of low-quality results produced by websites that have figured out how to manipulate the system by using content that is written to rank well in search results. According to Google, internet users would start to see useful content appear more prominently in search results. Over time, it intends to improve upon these changes and further develop its systems.
The new updates could be helpful to Reddit users who use the append Reddit “hack” to filter out unwanted sites in search results in favour of real human experiences. This is a useful feature while looking for hardware reviews.
Let’s say you’re trying to search for “Sony WH” a user in US can see results with “Reddit” on the end in favour of the word “review” for the popular Sony WH-1000XM series headphones. While Google’s blog post doesn’t mention Reddit as a source for the more personalised and authentic content, it’s hard not to make the association given recent search trends.
Google’s review focus is supposed to highlight more product reviews that provide in-depth research, “’rather than thin content that simply summarises a bunch of products.” Thus, if you intend to incorporate product reviews and User-generated content into your website, consider providing more detailed information rather than quick hitting quotes and one-liners.
Yet again, the company’s top priority is to continue to deliver relevant, high-quality search results that address users’ searches.
