Flutterwave’s remittance platform, Send App, has introduced a new product aimed squarely at one of the most persistent pain points faced by Nigerians in the diaspora: spending seamlessly when they return home. The company has announced the launch of the Send App Travel Card, a physical naira-denominated card designed for Nigerians abroad visiting Nigeria, particularly during the festive season.
Built in partnership with travel-technology company Odysy and powered by AfriGO, Nigeria’s domestic card scheme, the Travel Card allows users to spend locally without relying on cash, foreign cards, or unstable exchange rates. For many Nigerians returning home in December, foreign-issued cards often fail at local POS terminals, attract unpredictable conversion fees, or are rejected altogether. The new card is positioned as a practical solution to these challenges.
The Travel Card can be pre-ordered directly within the Send App platform before customers arrive in Nigeria. Users pay for the card through the app, have it delivered ahead of their trip, and can begin spending immediately upon receipt. The card works across POS terminals, ATMs, and contactless payment systems nationwide, enabling a smoother transition from international travel to local spending.
Funding the card is also designed to be familiar. Customers can top up the Travel Card directly from their UK, US, or EU cards through Send App’s existing remittance infrastructure, allowing them to manage funds before departure and avoid the hassle of sourcing cash upon arrival. This approach positions the card not just as a payment tool, but as an extension of Send App’s broader remittance ecosystem.
In Nigeria, Send App operates under Flutterwave Tech Payment Limited’s approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as an International Money Transfer Operator (IMTO). This regulatory backing ensures that inbound remittance flows linked to the Travel Card are compliant with Nigeria’s financial regulations, an important consideration as regulators tighten oversight of cross-border payments.
According to Harvey Bahia, Head of Send App Business at Flutterwave, the Travel Card represents a strategic expansion of the platform’s value proposition. While Send App has historically focused on enabling Nigerians abroad to support family and businesses back home, the new card allows users to fully participate in daily life when they return, using the same level of convenience and control they enjoy overseas.
The partnership with Odysy and AfriGO also highlights a growing focus on locally grounded payment infrastructure. Odysy CEO Chinonso Nwosu noted that the collaboration was driven by a shared goal of making travel spending seamless for the diaspora, while AfriGO’s Managing Director, Ebehijie Juliet Momoh, emphasized the benefits of a domestic card scheme, including secure naira transactions, local data control, faster settlements, and reliable performance even in low-connectivity environments.
Operationally, the Travel Card is designed for speed and flexibility. Cards are ready within 24 hours of ordering, with same-day delivery available in Lagos and Abuja for orders placed before 4 p.m. Users can lock, freeze, or replace their cards directly in the app, and no ATM activation is required—spending can begin immediately upon delivery.
As Nigeria’s diaspora remittance market continues to evolve beyond simple money transfers, the Send App Travel Card signals a shift toward more integrated financial products. By combining remittances, local payments, and domestic card infrastructure, Flutterwave is positioning Send App as a more complete financial companion for Nigerians living abroad.
The Send App Travel Card is now available via send.flutterwave.com, marking another step in the company’s push to bridge financial distance between Nigerians at home and abroad.
