TIME Magazine has just released its TIME100 Most Influential Companies 2021 List and Flutterwave is the only African company that made the list.
The TIME100 Most Influential Companies list highlights businesses making an extraordinary impact around the world.
To assemble it, TIME solicited nominations across sectors including health care, entertainment, transportation, technology and more from our global network of editors and correspondents, as well as from industry experts. Then, TIME evaluated each one on key factors, including relevance, impact, innovation, leadership, ambition and success. The result is a diverse array of 100 institutions, from the tech startup engineering a smarter way to recycle to the cryptocurrency firm reimagining the future of money to the pharma titans creating the vaccines of tomorrow (and today). Together, these businesses—and the leaders who steer them—are helping to chart an essential path forward.
The list consists of companies in five major categories – Pioneers, Leaders, Innovators, Titans and Disruptors. Flutterwave is highlighted in the Pioneer category for empowering retailers.
Emerging from Nigeria, Flutterwave is an African based fintech company that provides a payment infrastructure for global merchants and payment service providers across the continent. It was founded by Iyinoluwa Aboyeji and Olugbenga Agboola. The current CEO and co-founder, Olugbenga Agboola, was one of the six Nigerians that made the 2021 TIME100 Next list released in February 2021.
Flutterwave acquired tech-unicorn status in March 2020 when it secured $170 million in Series C funding from global investors, valuing the company at more than $1 billion. Another recent mention was its partnership with PayPal to allow African merchants to accept and make payments.
