Fate of the Furious, the eight in the Fast and Furious franchise has broken the global box office record by reeling in $532 million this easter weekend.
This is marginally higher than the $529m (£421.8m) taken by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The film opened with $100.2m in the US and $432.3 everywhere else led by $190 million in China.
Its nearest competitor was The Boss Baby, which took a further $15.5m to land second place.
Furious 7, the previous film in the franchise, opened to $64 million in 2015, and went on to pull in $390 million, which remains the largest gross ever by a Hollywood film in China.
The film stars the usual cast led by Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto character. In this edition, Dom is coarced to join forces with a cyberterrorist played by South African Charlize Theron, who turns him against his team.
