Facebook Messenger starts testing end-to-end encryption feature

“This message will disappear 5 minutes after 30 seconds after it is seen.”

This Mission Impossible – like feature is coming to Facebook Messenger. According to Facebook, this new option within Messenger is meant to support conversations about sensitive topics. This feature will enable you create one-to-one secret conversations in Messenger that will be end-to-end encrypted and which can only be read on one device of the person you’re communicating with.

Within a secret conversation, you can also choose to set a timer to control the length of time each message you send remains visible within the conversation.

Facebook claims that its technology uses the Signal Protocol developed by Open Whisper Systems. It is worthy to note that in secret conversations Facebook does not currently support rich content like GIFs and videos, making payments, or other popular Messenger features.

Secret conversations are available on a limited test basis right now, but will be more widely available this summer.

Other messaging apps like WhatsApp have long launched this same feature.
