Facebook has started merging Instagram and Messenger chats into one service

Facebook has started merging Instagram and Messenger chats according to a report from TheVerge. On Friday, it was reported that some people noticed an update screen popped up in Instagram’s mobile app with the message “There’s a New Way to Message on Instagram” with a list of features including a “chat with friends who use Facebook” – that is, Messenger.

Once updated, the regular DM icon in the top right of Instagram is replaced by the Facebook Messenger logo. However, at least for right now, it’s still not possible to message Facebook users from Instagram.

Facebook’s CEO and founder, Mark Zuckerberg, hinted on the initiative to merge Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram chats. He had said he wanted this because he wanted to make it easier to send messages across its apps and it would be more practicable to allow people to send messages across the apps.

The update could be the last activity before it officially announces the possibility of this inter-app chat messaging.

Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion in 2012 and purchased WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014.

Facebook has not commented on this yet.
