Ethiopia has introduced the first smart parking facility in Africa. This facility was built to address the lack of parking space for cars in the capital, Addis Ababa. Built using Chinese technology, it uses a modern automated lifting system to park cars on a in a steel structured building
This facility can take up to 90 cars and it cost the state about $2.2 million. Already there is a plan to build more of these facilities across the capital of Addis Ababa.
According to Said Solomon Kidane, Head, Addis Ababa city Transport Programs Management Bureau, “The number of vehicles is increasing and so is demand for parking. On our master plan we have selected 60 places to constructed smart and concreted parking systems. There are several smart parking systems being built in Addis at the moment similar to what you have seen. Some even have a capacity of parking about one thousand five hundred cars at a time.”
