Dan Marokane, the new CEO of Eskom, is set to take up his duties 30 days earlier than previously announced, starting on 1 March 2024. Eskom Board Chairman, Mteto Nyati, officially welcomed Marokane and expressed confidence in his leadership abilities and the potential for a successful turnaround at Eskom.
Nyati also expressed gratitude to Calib Cassim for providing stable leadership as the Acting Group Chief Executive during a difficult time. He praised Cassim’s dedication, commitment, and the significant milestones achieved under his stewardship.
Dan Marokane, an engineer by profession, previously headed Eskom’s group capital and served as the CEO of troubled sugar producer, Tongaat Hulett, since March 2023. He was suspended from Eskom along with three other executives due to their stand against state capture, fraud, and corruption.
In his role as CEO, Marokane faces the challenging task of reviving the struggling utility and navigating political challenges in the months leading up to South Africa’s national elections. His mandate will crucially include addressing the country’s ongoing energy crisis and load shedding – issues that his predecessors have been unable to resolve.
