The mayor-elect for New York, Eric Adams, has said that he would love to receive his pay in Bitcoins for his first three paychecks.
Adams who was a former police captain was elected this week on Tuesday to take over from the outgoing mayor of New York Bill de Blasio in January. He will also become the city’s second black mayor.
The incoming mayor while giving reason behind his decision noted that he wanted to make New York “Centre of the cryptocurrency industry.”
Mr. Adams is not the first political officer in the US to signal such intent as the mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez, had on Twitter expressed similar intent wanting to receive his first paycheck in bitcoin
Suarez also said he wanted to make Miami a hub for cryptocurrency innovation.
Adam seems to have taken it a step further by asking for three months’ pay in the cryptocurrency.
Adams tweeted, “In New York, we always go big, so I’m going to take my first three paychecks in bitcoin when I become mayor.
“NYC is going to be the centre of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries! Just wait!”
According to the BBC, Suarez launched a cryptocurrency called MiamiCoin controlled by a non-profit organization. It sends 30% of the value of the currency that is created on a person’s computer to the city and has raised $7m for Miami.
Adams in an interview said he would like to follow Suarez’s step to do something similar in New York.
