Equinix advocates for strengthening Nigeria’s internet with a South-South hub

When the Meta-backed 2Africa submarine cable made landfall at Qua Iboe Beach in Akwa Ibom State, it did more than just touch Nigerian soil, it dismantled a decades-old geographic monopoly. For the first time in Nigeria’s history, a major international subsea cable bypassed Lagos, signaling the birth of a second digital anchor for the continent’s most populous nation.

Facilitated by MainOne (an Equinix company), this landing is the cornerstone of a massive infrastructure project designed to decentralize Nigeria’s internet and build a resilient “digital gateway” in the South-South region.

Historically, Nigeria’s seven subsea cables have clustered in Lagos. While efficient, this concentration created a dangerous bottleneck.

    • The Vulnerability: In March 2024, an undersea landslide off Côte d’Ivoire severed several cables simultaneously. Because these cables shared similar paths to Lagos, the entire nation faced a digital blackout.
    • The Solution: By landing 2Africa in Akwa Ibom, Equinix has provided a physically independent pathway for international traffic. As Wole Abu, Managing Director of Equinix West Africa, noted: “The nation now has an independent pathway… That is a peerless value.”

Beyond security, the Lagos monopoly created a performance lag known as the “trombone effect.” Data from a user in Port Harcourt would often travel to Lagos, then overseas, and back through Lagos before reaching its destination in the same region. The new gateway physically shortens this path, dramatically reducing latency and improving the internet experience for the roughly 32 million residents of the South-South and South-East.

Landing a cable is merely the “Layer 1” of a functional ecosystem. MainOne has spent the last two years building the terrestrial infrastructure to make that capacity usable:

    1. The Landing Station: A modular cable landing station in Akwa Ibom where the subsea fiber terminates.
    2. The Middle Mile: Over 250 kilometers of new terrestrial fiber linking Akwa Ibom to Rivers State, creating a regional backbone.
    3. The PR1 Data Center: A new, carrier-neutral data center in Port Harcourt. This one-megawatt facility (expandable) is already live and hosting major global tech firms.

Combined, these elements allow network operators and cloud providers to interconnect locally. This keeps traffic within the region, lowering the “backhaul” costs that usually drive up internet prices for non-Lagos consumers.

Building in the South-South presented unique hurdles. The subsea route had to navigate a labyrinth of 18 oil and gas pipelines, which carry roughly 30% of Nigeria’s oil volumes. On land, the terrestrial fiber required seamless coordination across three states.

While state governments in the South-South have been lauded for “stellar” cooperation regarding permits, physical security remains a concern. Equinix continues to advocate for Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) protection to combat the persistent threat of cable theft and vandalism.

Equinix’s $320 million acquisition of MainOne in 2022 was a bet on Nigeria’s digital future. This new gateway transforms the South-South from an oil-dependent region into a global digital node.

    • For Businesses: Companies can now implement disaster recovery by mirroring operations between Lagos and Port Harcourt.
    • For Industry: Manufacturing and oil firms gain high-speed, reliable bandwidth for automated operations.
    • For Consumers: Faster speeds for remote work, telemedicine, and digital education.

    Wole Abu added:

Every data center is a global node. If you colocate in Port Harcourt, you can go to Perth, Sydney, or Japan.

The South-South gateway is not just a backup; it is a rebalancing of Nigeria’s digital power. By cutting the cord of Lagos dependency, Equinix is ensuring that as Nigeria moves toward an AI-driven and cloud-heavy future, the entire country, not just its commercial capital, has a seat at the table.
