Elon Musk recently confirmed his company’s intention to launch a Twitter video app for smart TVs, aligning with their renewed emphasis on expanding video content on the platform.
In response to a user’s tweet expressing the need for a Twitter video app for smart TVs, Musk simply replied, “It’s coming,” but didn’t share further details at this time.
Subscribers to Twitter’s paid service, Twitter Blue, already enjoy the benefit of uploading longer videos compared to non-subscribers. While this initially led to an increase in pirated movie uploads, other content creators have utilised Twitter to share and stream longer video-based offerings.
During an investor presentation on June 15th, newly appointed CEO Linda Yaccarino, along with Musk, unveiled Twitter’s strategic plans to concentrate on video content, creator collaborations, and commerce partnerships. According to Reuters, this initiative aims to revitalise the social media company’s business beyond digital advertising.
Yaccarino, who stepped into the CEO role on June 5, sent her first official memo with employees, promoting the vision of “Building Twitter 2.0 Together. She revealed in a private investor call that Twitter has been engaging in early discussions with prominent figures from politics and entertainment, payment service providers, as well as news and media publishers. These potential partnerships demonstrate Twitter’s commitment to expanding its revenue streams through video content and fostering collaborations with various sectors.
According to a source familiar with the matter, Yaccarino informed investors that ad spending in several advertiser categories has risen by at least 40% year-over-year. Notably, increased spending is observed in areas such as health, consumer packaged goods, and financial services.
Twitter’s plan to introduce a new video app for smart TVs signifies the platform’s growing emphasis on video content. In recent years, Twitter has made significant investments in video, evident from the introduction of its live-streaming platform, Periscope. The company is currently developing additional features designed to enhance the user experience when watching and sharing videos on the Twitter platform.
