Elon Musk has launched a poll asking if he should step down as CEO of Twitter. He says he will abide by the result of the poll. He had said in November that he would find a new leader for Twitter.
Is he serious? Well if Yes, I guess he should prepare to step down. As at the time of writing this blog post, 57.5% of respondents say he should step down.
This poll may be part of his response to the backlash he received when Twitter made some changes to policies that affected Twitter users a couple of days ago.
Just some hours ago, Twitter announced that it will no longer allow free promotion of specific social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, e.t.c on its platform. This drew a lot of criticisms which made Twitter quietly delete the policy. Elon then tweeted that the policy would be adjusted.
Truth be told, since he bought the social media platform, there has been a lot of changes which may not have been carefully thought through. So he has had to review and roll back the changes he implemented.
For example, he sacked over 50% of the staff when he took over and he had to bring back some of them that were important to the operations in the company.
One cannot argue that he has brought life to the Twitter timeline. Recently he stated that the micro-blogging site serves 90 billion impressions per day. He made this known via a tweet some days ago, highlighting the growth of the platform after implementing some of his initiatives since his takeover.
He behaviour on the platform is adversely affecting his fortunes at his other companies, for example Tesla. Some of his friends at his other companies—which include Tesla and SpaceX—are concerned that he is wasting his time in fights at Twitter.
He has sold billions of dollars worth of Tesla shares this year to finance the Twitter takeover. He has also brought in executives, engineers and lawyers from both Tesla and SpaceX to help him at Twitter.
So would he go ahead with his promise if the poll says he should step down? Or would he come up with another claim that bots sabotaged the poll? Only time will tell.
And if he steps down, who will take over? He has even said that “the question is not finding a CEO, the question is finding a CEO who can keep Twitter alive.
Wow. This would be interesting…
