Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has issued a press statement to announce that it has reverted to its old data tariff prices.
This was in reaction to cries on social media about the increase in data tariff prices effected after the directive from the telecoms regulator, POTRAZ, on the new floor pricing for data.
Apparently when POTRAZ came up with the new floor pricing for data earlier this week, this was supposed to take effect as from the 9th of January. Econet complied and this led to an increase in data tariffs. There was a public outcry and the Minister of ICT, Supa Mandiwanzira intervened, suspending the data tariff increases.
Econet then issued a statement acknowledging the complaints and stated that they were engaging the regulator on the matter.
Within a couple of hours, Econet issued another statement that whilst, it was continuing in its discussion with POTRAZ, they felt obliged to revert to the old data tariffs.
Apparently it was only Econet Wireless was the only operator taht had complied with the data floor pricing.
