Econet launches Mix The City in collaboration with the British Council. Mix the City lets you create your own music mash-ups.
Mix the City has reached hundreds of thousands users in dozens of countries, and through Econet, in collaboration with the British Council, Harare becomes the first African city to be added to the project. You can create your own mix at www.mixthecity.com and once you’ve mixed your own version, the website allows you to share on social media platforms. Remember every city has a voice and we are thrilled Harare’s voice joins the wagon.
This comes at a time when the recently launched Youth Empowerment program, Elevate, under one of its youth engagement pillar, Spin n Shuffle (entertainment-based) creates a platform for aspiring young artists to bring out the musicians, vocalists, producers, disk jockeys and so forth that are inside so many of them. The entertainment-based platform encourages youths to bring out in best in themselves, hence with the launch of Mix the City here in Zimbabwe definitely those aspiring DJs and artists will soon have an opportunity to be heard and their music shared on social media all over the world.

Mix The City is an online platform that invites people all around the world to discover the sights and sounds of a different region and create their own mix. Users anywhere in the world can take part and you don’t need to be a musician yourself to use Mix The City – select the musicians you want to hear and watch your creation come to life, on mobile, tablet or computer. The fun and easy-to-use platform was created by British creative agency Flying Object along with digital production company Roll Studio. Mix The City was commissioned by The Space along with the British Council, the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities.
Mix The City, Harare
A UK music producer Oli Bayston, better known as Boxed In, joined up with the British Council for Mix The City, Harare. Earlier in the year, he travelled to Zimbabwe to record 12 local musicians. Now you can meet them all, hear their music and create your own mix from their sounds. You’ll discover Dr Oliver Mtukudzi, legendary co-founder of the regional band ‘Mahube’ who is known by his many fans as Tuku; polyrhythmic percussionist Douglas Vambe, famous for the drum beat that has announced national news bulletins since 1962; dancehall artist Soul Jah Love; Afro-beat superstars Jah Prayzah and Ammara Brown; Josh Meck, one of Zimbabwe’s most high-profile Afro-jazz musicians; DJ Ray Dizz who has showcased his work at Ministry of Sound (London), Harare International Festival of the Arts and DJ Mag (Las Vegas); and Othnell ‘Mangoma’ Moyo, an ethnomusicologist and craftsman who builds the majority of the instruments he uses. Also featured are the ever energetic Blessing Chimanga, DJ Smyliy, the Prince Edward School and the renowned apostolic choral group Vabati va Jehova.
The musicians were recorded in iconic locations across the city including the Lion and Cheetah Park, the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe, Harare International Airport, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, Joina City Mall – the biggest shopping mall in Zimbabwe – Kuimba Shiri Bird Sanctuary, JP Studios, Prince Edward School Chapel, the colourful Mbare Flats, Julius Nyerere Footbridge and the legendary Dr Oliver Mtukudzi’s Pakare Paye Arts Centre.
