Two weeks ago when the annual AfricaCom Awards shortlist was released with an overwhelming number of excellent entries with the likes of Kwesé iflix, Econet Wireless (Cassava Fintech) and Mahindra Comviva we knew the selection process had been even more challenging than previous years.
Now guess what happened? And that shouldn’t even come as a surprise – Econet Group clinched top three awards at the prestigious AfricaCom Awards in a development signifying the mobile operating group’s impact internationally.
The awards we held in South Africa and recognized the achievements of the best companies, solutions and products.
Econet topped three categories which include best innovation in the digital entertainment award which went to Econet’s Kwesé iflix.
Ecocash, together with technology partner Mahindra Comviva, were presented with the Innovative Fintech Award for the platform’s merchant payments solution while Liquid Telecom received the best network improvement for completion of the Cape to Cairo fibre route.
Other companies that scooped awards include Huawei Technologies Orange for Rural Electrification while the changing lives award went to Ericsson and Wot if? Trust for eHUB Diepsloot South Africa.
The 2018 edition of the awards were announced at the Mardi Gras-themed event celebrating those trailblazers leading digital inclusion, connectivity and digital development on the African continent.
The colourful event was supported by founding awards sponsor, PCCW Global and was held in Cape Town.
AfricaCom awards event director Tom Cuthell, said that the high-level awards event continues to grow against the odds.
“AfricaCom continues to grow and with it the Awards I would like to thank everyone involved, our judging panel who rigorously vetted the entries, sponsors and partners for their ongoing support, and all the companies who continue to show how dedicated they are to ensuring that Africa advances into the digital ecosphere,” he said.
