    E-Learning: Why Nigerian Students Face Challenges

    Learning capabilities from student to student differ; the same goes for their ability to adapt to situations especially with the advent of e-learning.

    Contrary to popular opinion that learning online would be much easier than the traditional face-to-face way of learning, students are finding it difficult to transition. This has led to disinterest in the e-learning process. Learning abilities differ from student to student, so is the ability to adapt to situations specifically regards the advent of e-learning.

    In contrast to the general opinion that online learning will make learning easier than traditional face-to-face learning, students find it difficult to transition. This brings about a lack of interest in the online learning process.

    There are different factors that contribute to the difficulty in e-learning for students. Some of the factors include:

    Poor Time Management

    The majority of students can attest to the fact that it is an issue keeping track of time. Online courses require effort and time. Students find it hard to keep up to learning due to other daily commitment that arises. This can lead to poor performance because students will not have adequate time for proper assimilation of the courses which makes students rush through the process of learning. 

    It takes a lot of discipline for an individual to stick to the scheduled time for learning specifically in a situation where there is no one physically present to monitor them. To help students manage their time effectively, a planner is highly recommended to remind them of tasks and courses.

    Poor Network and Non-Access to Devices

    Nigerians are encounter network challenges, they are often faced with poor network connectivity. In addition, not every student can afford a smartphone or a PC. This has deprived many students of the opportunity to have access to courses online and to miss virtual classes. In addition, some of them have devices that are weak and are not compatible with the majority LMSs. As a teacher, it is important to know the technical issues your students encounter and how to assist them in solving the challenge.

    Computer Illiteracy

    A lot of students are not technically savvy. This brings about the challenge of adaptation. A lot of students cannot operate basic programs and cannot troubleshoot whenever they encounter challenges as a result of poor knowledge in that aspect. To develop the technical proficiency of students, teachers are encouraged to expose students to basic computer training. This will assist them to participate in online classes seamlessly.

    Low Motivation

    It can be overwhelming to transition from a mode of learning to another within a short time. A lot of students enroll for online courses and some do not follow up or drop off along the way. The challenges mentioned earlier can lead to low motivation.

    A positive mindset and attitude are required to assist them to get through this. Teachers can make the classes encouraging by adding engaging exercises mid-course and developing a means that allows students to collaborate and ask questions.

    E-learning is the new trend and students have to adapt, they have no choice. With the challenges and solutions discussed in this write-up, the learning process should be easier for students.
