During the opening ceremony of the 2023 Digital Nigeria International Conference in Abuja, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, proudly declared that Nigeria has emerged as a leading hub for technology startups in Africa.
In his address at this 3-day event, Tijani commended the remarkable strides taken by trailblazers such as the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Galaxy Backbone, and other innovative companies within the nation. These pioneering entities have established a solid foundation for technological development in Nigeria.
Dr. Tijani went on to reveal that out of the $5 million invested in tech startups across Africa, a notable 20 percent has found its home in Nigeria. He emphasised, “Today, Nigeria stands as the premier destination for technology startup capital on the African continent. Last year, approximately $5 million was invested in tech startups across Africa, and Nigeria secured an impressive 20 percent share of that total investment. We acknowledge the incredible work that has been accomplished.”
He emphasised the pivotal role of digital technology in advancing Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which centers on achieving inclusive economic growth, productivity, and prosperity for all. According to Tijani, digital technology is the most potent tool to realise these objectives. He elaborated, “Our vision is to harness digital technologies to stimulate job creation.”
Furthermore, Tijani highlighted that the conference would serve as a platform for networking and fostering discussions that have the potential to drive innovation, shape policy, and establish a regulatory framework that can further strengthen the technology ecosystem, ultimately enhancing Nigeria’s global visibility.
The conference attracted a substantial attendance of young participants from Nigeria, various African countries, and beyond, representing a diverse global audience.
