Dolby Vision 2 promises next-level picture quality beyond traditional HDR

For over a decade, Dolby Vision has stood as a benchmark in high dynamic range (HDR) technology, shaping the visual experience on TVs and displays worldwide. At IFA 2025 in Berlin, Dolby Laboratories announced the next evolution of its acclaimed imaging technology: Dolby Vision 2.

This major upgrade pushes visual fidelity beyond traditional HDR standards, introducing enhanced clarity, contrast, and color depth designed to meet the demands of next-generation content and devices. Dolby Vision 2 aims to redefine how viewers experience entertainment, offering a more immersive and lifelike picture across a wide range of screens.

The foundation of Dolby Vision 2 is a new feature called Content Intelligence. Dolby describes this as a bridge between a filmmaker’s creative vision and what viewers see on their screens. Using AI, Content Intelligence automatically adapts the picture based on both the content being played and the lighting conditions in your room.

Key features of Content Intelligence include:

    • Precision Black: Enhances visibility in dark scenes, ensuring details aren’t lost.
    • Light Sense: Detects ambient light in the room to optimize the picture for the best possible quality.
    • Sports and Gaming Optimization: Specifically tunes white point and motion control to suit the fast-paced nature of live sports and video games.

In addition to these intelligent features, Dolby Vision 2 introduces Bi-directional tone mapping, which works with premium TVs to produce brighter whites, deeper blacks, and more vibrant colors while maintaining the director’s original artistic intent.

Dolby Vision 2 also introduces features that go beyond standard HDR. One of the most notable is Authentic Motion, which Dolby calls the “world’s first creative-driven motion control tool.” This technology is designed to make scenes feel more naturally cinematic by preserving the original motion intended by the creators.

Dolby Vision 2 will be available in two tiers:

    • Dolby Vision 2 Max: The premium version, designed for high-end TVs to unlock all of the new features and processing power.
    • Dolby Vision 2: The standard version, which will be available on mainstream TVs and will still include the new image engine and Content Intelligence features.

Dolby has already confirmed partnerships for the new technology. Hisense will be the first TV manufacturer to bring Dolby Vision 2 to market, supporting the standard on its premium RGB-MiniLED models. Additionally, the French streaming service Canal+ plans to use the technology for its movies, TV shows, and live sports broadcasts.

It’s expected that more details and product announcements will follow at CES in January, where many new TVs are typically unveiled.

IFA 2025 Set to Showcase AI-Powered Innovation in Berlin

IFA, often referred to as Europe’s answer to CES, is set to kick off on September 5 in Berlin, Germany, bringing together global tech leaders to unveil the latest in consumer electronics and smart technologies. While it may not dominate headlines like Apple’s iPhone launch event on September 9, IFA consistently delivers a wide range of noteworthy announcements across industries.

Last year’s IFA 2024 spotlighted the rise of AI-powered PCs, with brands like ASUS and Dell introducing new models, including Dell’s first Inspiron laptop featuring Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus chip. The event also showcased creative innovations, such as Honor’s laptop with a detachable webcam, highlighting the show’s reputation for blending mainstream tech with experimental ideas.

What to Expect at IFA 2025

Based on the companies confirmed to attend, AI will once again be a central theme, particularly in smart home appliances, laptops, and wearable tech. Expect to see devices powered by Intel’s Panther Lake chips, as well as Arm-based systems, reflecting the ongoing evolution of mobile and desktop computing.

Smart glasses are also expected to maintain momentum, with several manufacturers likely to unveil new models or upgrades. As AI continues to integrate deeper into everyday devices, IFA 2025 will serve as a key platform for showcasing how intelligent features are reshaping user experiences.
