In a major content expansion, Disney+ has added ESPN and ESPN2 to its South African streaming platform, giving subscribers access to premium international sports content at no additional charge. The new channels went live on Thursday, 2 October 2025, and are available to all Disney+ users on both Premium and Mobile plans, provided they have enabled the 18+ content setting.
This move significantly enhances the value proposition of Disney+ in South Africa, introducing live and studio sports programming from the United States and around the world. Subscribers can now enjoy live broadcasts, sports news, and award-winning ESPN documentaries, alongside coverage of major global sporting leagues.
Kyle de Klerk, Sports Director at The Walt Disney Company Africa, commented:
We’re thrilled to bring even more value to our subscribers through ESPN’s award-winning documentaries, breaking sports news, and fixtures from the most popular and exciting sporting leagues. This addition reflects our commitment to delivering diverse, high-quality content to South African audiences.
Streaming’s Growing Role in Sports Broadcasting
The integration of ESPN into Disney+ highlights a broader global trend: live sports are increasingly becoming central to the streaming ecosystem, which was once dominated by scripted series and films. While traditional satellite broadcasters like MultiChoice Group, owner of SuperSport, continue to hold a dominant position in African sports broadcasting, platforms like Disney+ are beginning to challenge that status quo by offering a more comprehensive entertainment experience.
Globally, major streaming services are investing heavily in live sports rights:
- Amazon Prime Video streams NFL’s Thursday Night Football.
- Apple TV+ has secured rights to Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer.
- Netflix is experimenting with live sports events, including tennis and boxing.
Disney’s decision to incorporate ESPN channels into its South African offering aligns the country with these international developments, giving local consumers more choice as sports broadcasting gradually shifts online.
Access and Parental Controls
To access ESPN and ESPN2 on Disney+, users must have the 18+ content setting enabled. Parents can manage viewing preferences by applying content restrictions and PINs to limit access to mature programming. Importantly, ESPN remains available on DStv, ensuring continuity for viewers who prefer traditional satellite services.
