Chat app Discord laid off around 4% of its staff on Thursday, and the 4% cut amounts to around 40 staffers. The cuts primarily impacted the company’s marketing team. Some employees were also moved into different roles at the company. Discord had over 900 employees as of April 2023, The New York Times reported.
Discord can confirm that approximately 4% of our team have been let go as part of the reorganization of some business units, and we are ensuring that those impacted are being supported. We are focused on the long-term growth of the business and delivering on our mission.

Several employees who identified as Discord staffers working on graphic design and entertainment partnerships posted about the layoffs on LinkedIn and Twitter.
Discord is a social messaging platform that is widely used in gaming and other creator communities. Last year, Discord began to allow US-based creators to monetize their communities on the messaging platform with server subscriptions that paywall premium content.
While Discord has otherwise remained unscathed by the wave of mass layoffs in the industry, it joins the ranks of over 25 creator-economy companies that have let go of employees since May 2022, from large companies like Meta Platforms and TikTok, to smaller startups like esports brand FaZe Clan and link-in-bio upstart Linktree.
