The Managing Director of MultiChoice Nigeria, John Ugbe, strongly believes that Nigeria is in need on adequate regulatory and legal framework, in addition to a strong commitment from all stakeholders to successfully achieve transition from analogue to digital television broadcasting.
Ugbe said this while delivering a keynote address in Lagos at the Third Digital Migration Summit organised by the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON). According to him, Nigeria is a late starter on the migration journey but the country can learn from the experiences of countries that have achieved digital migration and avoid the mistakes from previous exercises.
He said the United Kingdom, Kenya and Rwanda opted for make Free-to-Air (FTA) cost-free. Furthermore, he said they all had adequate regulatory and legal framework in place, and ensured that there was buy-in from all stakeholders. According to him, everyone had a role to play:
“From making Set Top Boxes (STBs) affordable and partnering with the private sector which brought in investment. Digitization will ensure better transmission quality and make more channels available,” Ugbe said.
