The DietSensor app is a a magical app and accompanying scanner that allows you to know the calories, carbohydrate breakdown, fat content, and protein in everything you eat – with just a quick point of the device.

DietSensor is aimed at people with conditions that require them to keep a close eye on their diet. SCiO with DietSensor can be especially helpful to diabetics, or people with cardiovascular disease. Of course, those struggling to lose weight and athletes trying to hit the pinnacle of physical fitness can make good use of DietSensor.

The DietSensor app was chosen as Best of CES 2016 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Software and Mobile Apps category.

DietSensor is in partnership with ConsumerPhysics, creators of the first, pocket, wifi-connected molecular sensor: SCiO.

SCiO uses something called near infrared spectroscopy to determine the chemical makeup of food and drink. Each type of molecule in a food vibrates in its own unique way, and these vibrations interact with light to create a unique, optical signature. In brief, spectrometers analyze what is in a substance based on how its molecules interact with light.

The DietSensor app is free. However DietSensor with SCiO is set at $250 for early bird pre-orders. Shipping starts in May 2016.

I hope it can be used to analyse Nigerian foods such as Garri, Pounded Yam and Afang soup. I also wonder what value it will give to Cow hide popularly known as ponmo.
