Microsoft announced its Azure OpenAI Service is now generally available to all as part of Microsoft’s continued commitment to democratizing Artificial Intelligence. This means that more people now have access to large, advanced AI models in the world—including GPT-3.5, Codex, and DALL•E 2—backed by the trusted enterprise-grade capabilities and AI-optimized infrastructure of Microsoft Azure, to create cutting-edge applications.
The tech giant also announced that “customers will also be able to access ChatGPT—a fine-tuned version of GPT-3.5 that has been trained and runs inference on Azure AI infrastructure—through Azure OpenAI Service soon.”
Microsoft debuted Azure OpenAI Service in November 2021 to enable customers to tap into the power of large-scale generative AI models with the enterprise promises customers have come to expect from our Azure cloud and computing infrastructure—security, reliability, compliance, data privacy, and built-in Responsible AI capabilities.
Azure OpenAI Service provides businesses and developers with high-performance AI models at production scale with industry-leading uptime. This is the same production service that Microsoft uses to power its own products, including GitHub Copilot, an AI pair programmer that helps developers write better code, Power BI, which leverages GPT-3-powered natural language to automatically generate formulae and expressions, and the recently-announced Microsoft Designer, which helps creators build stunning content with natural language prompts.
This development comes days after Microsoft was said to be working with OpenAI to incorporate its ChatGPT software into the Bing search engine and also looking to integrate OpenAI’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot technology into its popular office applications to improve efficiency and productivity.
According to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella at the World Economic Forum on Tuesday, he said that the company was bullish on OpenAI integration. “Every product of Microsoft will have some of the same AI capabilities to completely transform the product.” Tools like ChatGPT, Nadella argues, are needed to boost productivity. “We need something that truly changes the productivity curve so we can have real economic growth,” said Nadella.
Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 to focus on building a platform that OpenAI will use to create new AI technologies and deliver on the promise of artificial general intelligence
