In a bid to improve the economic wellbeing of Cross River State Women, the Cross River State House of Assembly has passed a resolution granting approval to the State Government to accept an offer of a credit facility of N1,000,000,000.00 (one billion Naira) from Zenith Bank PLC.

In order to enhance the economic wellbeing of Cross River State Women, the Cross River State House of Assembly has passed a resolution approving the State Governments credit facility offer of N1,000,000,000.00 one billion naira from Zenith Bank PLC.

The credit facility is offered with an interest rate of 9% over the period of 36 months to empower 2000 women farmers in cassava and yellow maize cultivation on 5000 hectares of land in the Northern senatorial district of the state.

The Lawmakers took the resolution, after deliberating on a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, (SSG), Tina Banku Agbor which conveyed the Governor’s request for the assembly’s approval.

A member observed that the facility will have a great impact on cross rivers women to enhance their economic conditions and assist the reduction of poverty among citizens. The state government was lauded for the initiative.

Some of the house members, however, argued against the facility stating that women in the other two senatorial districts of the state should be considered for equity and fairness.

The Lawmakers, in a resolution, moved by House Leader, Peter Odey (Ogoja) and seconded by the Whip, Okon Ephraim (Calabar South I) and Regina Anyogo(Yala 1 and Deputy Whip) agreed that the facility is approved adding that it should be extended to the Central and Southern Senatorial districts in due course but for now it will start from the North.

The Speaker, Eteng Jonah Williams( Yakurr 2)directed the Clerk to forward clean copies of the resolution to the State Governor.
