Last week, Innovation Village reported that an Abuja-based music artist, Omenuwoma Okson Dovie, also known as Baba 2010 had threatened to drag Nigeria’s largest telecoms company MTN before a high court if it fails to pay him N500 million as compensation for the network’s decision to illegally use his songs as caller tunes.
This week, the Nigeria Copyright Commission (NCC) has summoned the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Mr. Michael Ikpoki, to the commission’s headquarters to clarify allegations of violation of copyright in the musical works of the artiste Dovie.
The MTN CEO is expected to be at the commission’s headquarters on September 28.
According to Dovie, MTN used his music as caller ring-back tones without obtaining due permission from. The commission, in the letter of invitation, noted that the agency is vested with the powers to administer and regulate copyright as stipulated under the Copyright Act Cap C28 Laws of the Federation of 2004.
The invitation, according to the regulator, is also in pursuant to section 34 and 38 (5) of the NCC Act.
