At about 5:30AM ET today, a huge global web outage swept across the internet which took out well-known sites including Amazon, Twitch, and Reddit.
A report by The Verge confirms that the Fastly Content Delivery Network (CDN) was the source of the outage, which lasted for more than an hour. Major news sites like CNN, The New York Times, The Guardian, and the Financial Times were also affected.
Android Police also reported that a tipster reached out to the new site mentioning sites like Reddit, Twitch, Amazon, Stack Overflow, PayPal, Etsy, Vimeo, Shopify, Spotify, AWS, HMRC, eBay, GitHub, Pinterest, Twitter, Squarespace, Imgur, Fandom/Wikia, Tidal, Kickstarter, and possibly many more were showing as down on DownDetector.
However, the severity of the outages varied regionally, so things might have been better for you, or you may not even have noticed the outage at all.
The Verge said its site was down for more than an hour. According to the reporter, the new site had to redirect readers to Google Docs on the news update on the outage.
The issues also affected UK government websites, so British citizens were unable to renew passports, apply for tax allowances, or obtain driving licenses during the outage.
Fastly hasn’t commented fully on the issues other than an outage message on the company’s status page. “The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented,” said Fastly at 6:44AM ET.
