According to reports from 9to5mac, a Chinese factory which employed over hundred workers on six production lines to produce over 41,000 knockoff iPhones got raided and shut down by the Beijing police, seizing about 1,400 counterfeit smartphones during the raid. Though, this raid took place in May but only got disclosed on 26th of July by the Chinese authorities. Some of these counterfeit devices made it to the United States leading to an investigation by the U.S. authorities.
China has for many years been one of the largest sources of counterfeit goods due to lack of intellectual property protection in the country – even with fake Apple Stores where even the staff thought they were working for Apple.
The fake phone shown in the photo has a fake Touch ID sensor… It doesn’t exactly read a fingerprint but it unlocks the phone when touched.
The total value of the fake phones was estimated at 120M Yuan ($19M).
