ChatGPT Recovers After 10-Hour Outage; Voice Mode Still Glitchy

By Jessica Adiele on June 12, 2025 Artificial Intelligence

OpenAI’s ChatGPT experienced a massive global outage on June 10, 2025, rendering millions of users across different continents unable to access the network. During the early morning hours, reports from the U.S, U.K, Nigeria, Canada, and Australia began pouring in about server crashes, empty chats and slow processing. The ChatGPT suite impacted other features as well, such as the GPT-4o voice mode, Sora (the video model), and file uploads, in addition to text generation.

Despite previous bouts of brief and severe problems, this was among the most intense and prolonged incidents that OpenAI has encountered in recent times. Key elements of AI, which are essential for productivity, creativity and education in many users today, were unavailable for almost 10 hours. This was a problem that affected everyone from casual users to enterprise clients.

    Engineers Respond, Services Recover

OpenAI’s group began investigating higher error rates around 3:00 a.m. The problem quickly escalated to a widespread outage across multiple regions. Continuous disruptions in service were made on the company’s official status page throughout the day, with every new layer of the outage being disclosed publicly, covering everything from basic chat functions to advanced features such as voice input and Sora.

Despite some lingering issues, ChatGPT Plus and free users had resumed most services by mid-evening. Even with the implementation of GPT-4o in voice mode, it was still affected by delays and glitches that persisted into the next day.

    Ripple Effects across the Ecosystem

It was a disruption that affected the wider technology ecosystem. ChatGPT has evolved from a chatbot to an embedded solution for developers, content creators, customer service teams, educators and enterprise productivity suites. Numerous users claimed that they were prevented from executing workflows, resuming ideas, and initiating code generation. The disruption was not just a minor setback, but also halted the momentum of students using the AI for study materials and journalists relying on summarization tools.

Claude, Google Gemini and open-source models like Mistral and DeepSeek experienced significant increases in usage during the shutdown period. The competition capitalized on the opportunity to promote trustworthiness and differentiate their products, which helped to enhance the competitive edge of the AI sector.

    What Caused the Outage?

Despite not having a detailed explanation for the cause, early indicators suggest that the outage may have stemmed from a sudden spike in demand on backend systems due to the growing load of multimodal features like voice, image, and file handling. It has been suggested that the problem may have originated from OpenAI’s Azure cloud infrastructure partner, but no official confirmation has emerged.

Users were reassured by OpenAI in a short statement that the system is being stabilized and that it will conduct a thorough review of the incident to prevent future incidents.

    A Test of Trust

This global failure has rekindled debates on the fragility of AI-as-service models. As generative AI tools become more prevalent in the business and individual worlds, any system failure is a clear indication of the requirement for redundancy, offline alternatives, and cross-platform resilience. There is renewed pressure on OpenAI for investment in load balancing, predictive scaling and openness of communication when services are disruptive.

ChatGPT and similar AI systems have become an integral part of everyday infrastructure, marking a new digital reality. Just as we expect Gmail or Slack to be consistently available, the same is now expected from AI assistants.

    What’s Next for Voice Mode?

Although most core services are now functioning properly, Voice mode still exhibits high error rates, according to OpenAI. The organization is presently engaged in working towards a resolution, with plans to communicate any updates soon. During this time, users are advised to use standard text input for best performance.

To maintain user trust, a complete recovery is essential as voice interaction gains popularity for tasks like note-taking, accessibility, and verbal brainstorming.

    Final Thoughts

While ChatGPT is back online, the June 10 outage may prompt deeper reflections across the tech world.  The size of its users and the expectations that come with it serves as a reminder to OpenAI. For users, it may serve as a signal to expand tools and build contingency plans. And for competitors, it has been a chance to prove their resilience.

Uptime is no longer optional but necessary for generative AI as it matures into a critical infrastructure.
