    Mobile operator Cell C announced on Wednesday that it had experienced a “cybersecurity incident” affecting certain parts of its IT environment, resulting in the exposure of some customer data.

    In a press statement, the company revealed;

    Initial findings from our ongoing investigation suggest that data related to a limited number of individuals may have been accessed by an unauthorized party.

    Upon discovering the breach, Cell C took immediate action to contain the issue and enlisted the help of cybersecurity experts to assist with the investigation. However, the company did not disclose specific details such as the number of customers affected, the types of data compromised, how the incident occurred, or the exact timing of the breach. TechCentral has reached out to Cell C for further information.

    Cell C stated: “Our top priority is to protect the integrity of our systems and the confidentiality of customer data. We have notified the relevant authorities, and we will keep stakeholders informed as we work to resolve the situation. Cybercrime is increasingly prevalent locally and globally, and we continuously invest in enhancing our cybersecurity measures to mitigate risk.”

    The company also urged its customers to remain vigilant and take steps to protect their personal information. It provided a link to a guide on its website that it said would help customers stay “cybersmart”.
