CanalBox, a new broadband internet service provider, has officially launched in Uganda, promising to revolutionize internet connectivity in the East African nation. The company has invested over Shs50 billion (US$13.5 million) in the past 11 months to establish its fiber optic network infrastructure in the country, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s digital transformation journey.

This strategic investment aligns with Uganda’s recent initiatives to boost digital connectivity and foster innovation. The government’s commitment to expanding internet access and promoting digital literacy has created a favorable environment for companies like CanalBox to thrive.

CanalBox aims to democratise broadband internet access through its fiber optic technology, offering high-speed and reliable internet services to homes, businesses, and schools. The company has already connected over 5,000 homes in Kampala, the capital city, making it the 13th city and Uganda the 8th African country to benefit from CanalBox’s services.

The company offers two primary fiber optic internet plans: Start and Premium. The Start plan provides 50 Mbps download and upload speeds, while the Premium plan offers an impressive 200 Mbps for both download and upload. These plans cater to different user needs, from basic internet browsing and email to demanding applications like video streaming and online gaming.

CanalBox’s competitive pricing further enhances its appeal. The Start plan is priced at Shs110,000 per month, while the Premium plan costs Shs200,000 per month. This affordability, combined with the high-speed and reliable nature of fiber optic internet, positions CanalBox as a game-changer in the Ugandan market.

The launch of CanalBox has been met with enthusiasm from both consumers and government officials. The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, welcomed the new player in the market and expressed confidence in its potential to boost broadband internet penetration in the country.

With its significant investment, advanced technology, and competitive pricing, CanalBox is poised to make a substantial impact on Uganda’s internet landscape. The company’s expansion is expected to enhance productivity, fuel innovation, and support the country’s digital economy aspirations. As more Ugandans gain access to high-speed internet, new opportunities for education, entrepreneurship, and e-commerce are likely to emerge, further accelerating Uganda’s development trajectory.
