Cairo-based transportation startup Swvl has announced that it will be launching in Lagos, Nigeria by mid-July. The startup is currently seeking to recruit a Country Manager to kick-start the operations.

In a conversation with Menabytes, Swvl will be launching with 50 buses initially. This will be the third country that the startup will launch in after Egypt and Kenya.

Founded in 2017 by Mostafa Kandil, co-founder and CEO, Swvl is based in Cairo and offer an app-based mass transit system which enables riders heading in the same direction to share fixed-route bus trips for a flat fare with no surge pricing.

Swvl and Ford recently signed a partnership agreement that will see the Ford Transit minibus as the preferred vehicle of choice on SWVL’s routes.

Late last year, Swvl raised series B funding of “tens of millions of dollars” to enable the company solidify its position as a global leader in building tech-enabled public transportation and finance the launch of its R&D facility in Berlin, Germany

The company is targeting to be in seven megacities by the end of next year.
