Kenyan digital ticketing pioneer BuuPass has announced the expansion of its innovative Bus Management System (BMS) to include additional bus operators, aiming to bolster transparency and improve the efficiency of bus company operations.
Co-founded by Sonia Kabra and Wyclife Omondi in 2016, BuuPass operates as a B2B2C mobility marketplace that simplifies the process of searching, comparing, and booking travel tickets for users through various channels including a website, mobile application, and USSD. Additionally, the company’s SaaS platform offers bus operators a robust solution for managing their operations, tracking inventory, and streamlining sales processes.
To date, BuuPass has successfully facilitated the sale of over 16 million travel tickets, contributing to a total goods value of more than US$100 million. The startup’s achievements include participation in the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and receiving support from the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund. Earlier in the year, BuuPass also expanded its market presence by acquiring its industry counterpart, QuickPass.
The BMS by BuuPass is strategically designed to tackle the primary challenges encountered by bus operators. The system’s central feature is its ability to enhance transparency and managerial control by offering real-time insights into various operational facets, including ticket sales and route performance analytics.
The latest group of bus operators to adopt the BuuPass BMS includes prominent names such as Abuya, Abandu, Shoreline, and Bin Ibrahim. These operators are responsible for key transportation routes connecting Nairobi with Garissa, Moyale, Busia, as well as the Mombasa-Busia and Mombasa-Kitui routes. To facilitate a seamless transition to the digital system, BuuPass equips these operators with essential hardware like scanners, computers, and digital printers, and also provides extensive training to their personnel on how to effectively utilize the system.
Sonia Kabra, reflecting on the impact of their service, remarked;
What we are witnessing is nothing short of a digital renaissance in bus operations. Our Bus Management Service isn’t just a tool—it’s the future of this industry.
