BuniTV prides itself as the leading video-on-demand (VoD) for high quality African contents. It launched Buni+ on Monday March 3rd, 2013. Buni+ subscribers will have access to a range of top African movies for $5 USD a month.
When I met Marie, the founder and CEO, in Lagos some months back, she mentioned to me that they were working on something new. She also recently mentioned to me the recent trips she’s been making to the US and Germany. It is finally here as Buni+.
For $5/month, subscribers to Buni+ will have access to a range of top African movies such as Kenyan blockbuster NAIROBI HALF LIFE or the massively successful gangster film JERUSALEMA: GANGSTER PARADISE, and compelling television like South African drama THE MATING GAME. Kids and their parents will love the funny and cute animated show JUNGLE BEAT.
If you’ve are one of those that primarily live on the Internet and consume most of their media on the Internet, this is one service you’d likely want to take for a spin. As times goes on, more original and quality contents will be added to BuniTV services.
Fans of THE XYZ SHOW will also be able to access new Season 9 episodes (premiering on March 8th) on Buni+ one day before they air on television. After one week these episodes will become available to all users for free.
Viewers interested in subscribing can pay via M-Pesa and other mobile money services, credit card, or Paypal, and can cancel the service at any time.
The launch of Buni+ is a big milestone on which our team has been working hard for a while, so were very excited said Buni TV CEO Marie Lora-Mungai. Buni+ subscribers will be able to enjoy a wide range of amazing movies, short films, TV shows and documentaries, and we also have several major TV deals in the pipeline.
BuniTV will be providing premium contents just as Nigerian based Iroko TV does too. Are there enough people on the continent that are ready to stream movies online? We have fast broadband that can enable people to stream online contents without buffering; especially with the introduction of Smile Communication 4G LTE that has been in operation in Ibadan and that just launched in Lagos, Nigeria. What I am concerned about is the cost of broadband. At N10,000 for 10 GB, are we ready to start streaming premium contents on the Internet?
This is a space I have been watching for some time now and I’d love to see how it grows going forward.
