BudgIT, a Nigerian civic startup, is now fully operational in Liberia & Sierra Leone. This means the startup is present in four countries after its expansion to Ghana in 2019.

Founded by Oluseun Onigbinde and Joseph Agunbiade in 2011, BudgIT is a civic organization that applies technology to intersect citizen engagement with institutional improvement, to facilitate societal change. It started operations incubated at Co-creation Hub, a leading technology hub in Lagos

A pioneer in the field of social advocacy melded with technology, BudgIT uses an array of tech tools to simplify the budget and matters of public spending for citizens, with the primary aim of raising standard of transparency and accountability in government.

The company has so far raised $2.9 million in funding over 3 rounds. In 2014, the Omidyar Network invested $400,000 in BudgIT and $1.43 grant from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

One of BudgIT known tools is its project-tracking tool (Tracka), created in 2014. Tracka is now functional in 20 States in Nigeria, and allows Nigerians post pictures of developmental projects in their communities, with BudgIT’s project officers aiding citizens offline to communicate with their elected representatives, and demand completion of the government projects in their neighbourhoods.
