biNu announced that over 1 million customers use its Moya messenger in a month and about 650,000 customers use the platform every day.
Moya Messenger, a WhatsApp alternative, is mobile messaging app that enables users to communicate without incurring data cost. So no data cost is incurred by users to send and receive 1 to 1 or group messages – and visit a range of #datafree websites and apps.
It was launched by biNu, an Australian company that opened its South African office in 2014, the app is part of the company’s focus on providing affordable Internet access that doesn’t require high speed connection.
Moya is able to offer the service for free because of its reverse billing agreements with the major telcos in South Africa – MTN, Vodacom, Cell C and Telkom. It has also built a tech platform that enables partners and customers to make their apps and websites data-free for end-users.

Gour Lentell, co-founder of biNu said, “The viral success of Moya shows the strong value proposition of #datafree messaging – plus users are also happy to explore, engage and interact with #datafree content from all types of organisations.
Moya provides an audience platform of hard-to-reach mobile users that consumer brand companies and others struggle to reach through traditional online marketing channels. Our model enables enterprises to reach and engage with mass-market mobile audiences through the use of toll-free data services”.
