Bill Gates, co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft, announced that he and his wife, Melinda Gates, are getting a divorce after 27 years. The billionaire made this announcement on Twitter today.
He stated that they came to this decision after a great deal of thought and a lot of work on their relationship.
He however said that they would continue to work together at the foundation. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was launched in 2000 and is reported to be the largest private foundation in the world, holding over $51 billion in assets.
This announcement comes a couple of years after Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie announced that they were getting a divorce.
In 2019, Bill Gates joined Jeff Bezos in the $100 Billion Club. He is the fourth richest person in the world with an estimated net worth $130 billion. Melinda Gates was No. 5 on Forbes’ list of the world’s most powerful women in 2020.
Upon receipt of the announcement, Bloomberg delisted Bill Gates from the billionaire’s list even though financial details of their parting has not been announced. It is however expected that Melinda may take half of her husband’s wealth.
