Andela, a company which provides companies with access to the top 1% of tech talent across the African continent, has announced its partnership with Big Data University. Big Data University is an IBM initiative that seeks to train 1 million data scientists around the world in the next 10 years. Launched in 2015, it offers free courses about big data and databases. Each course is followed by a knowledge assessment, and if you pass it, you earn a certificate of achievement from IBM that you can show off at your next job interview.
In January, two Andela developers joined IBM to build out the new Big Data University site and course management platform, and an additional two are on-boarding this month.
According to a recent Glassdoor report, data science is the most lucrative career in tech. The median salary for a Data Scientist in the U.S. is a cushy $116,000, and there are over 1,700 open jobs. It makes total sense — as businesses of all kinds are overloaded by massive amounts of data, data scientists are essential to sift through the noise and uncover insights that power smart business decisions.
Through the official partnership, Andela is helping IBM tap into tech communities across Africa to recruit future data scientists on the continent.
