According to latest sports statistics, German football club, Bayern Munich, is now officially the most supported club in world football in terms of membership numbers.

At 277,000 fans, it has surpassed Spanish giants Barcelona.

Bayern president Karl Hopfner expressed his delightment at the achievement.

“I’m delighted at the ongoing excitement about our club. Hopefully more and more Bayern fans will express their identification with the club by becoming members in the future,” he told the official Bundesliga website.

According to the figures, the club increased their fan membership by 7000, taking them even further ahead of the second most supported German side, Schalke, by close to 135,000 members.

The Bavarians have enjoyed an unprecedented period of success in recent times both domestically and on the continent, which has no doubt contributed to their increasing popularity.

The German giants are already hard at work preparing to challenge on all fronts once more under the guidance of the recently appointed Carlo Ancelotti.

Bayern begin their Bundesliga campaign with a home clash with Werder Bremen on 26 August.
