AliPay and WeChat may soon be integrated into Barclays Kenya’s Timiza Platform.

Timiza is a virtual banking platform built by Barclays Kenya, that allows users to get an instant loan, transfer funds or purchase insurance.

A Barclays official stated that the increasing relations between Kenya and China create a need for tools that facilitate cross- border transactions.

Timiza Head, Andrew Mwithiga expressed the firm’s desire to enter into strategic partnerships with other fintech firms outside the country, among them WeChat and Alipay.

Mr. Mwithiga said, “We are keen to enter into strategic partnerships that transcend banks, telecommunication, and financial technology companies both within inside and outside the country and this may include WeChat Pay and Alipay to improve our customer experience.”

The move also aims to connect small traders and entrepreneurs who import goods from China to convenient digital money platforms.
