Axian Energy, a leading pan-African renewable energy company, in partnership with Sika Capital, has officially announced the launch of a transformative solar energy project in Benin. The initiative involves the construction of four strategically located solar power plants across the country, with a combined generation capacity of 50 megawatts alternating current (MWac).

This ambitious project is designed to supply clean, reliable electricity to approximately 50,000 households, significantly advancing Benin’s national goal of achieving 30% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030. The solar plants will be situated in Bohicon, Parakou, Djougou, and Natitingou, regions selected for their energy needs and development potential.

With a total investment of €45 million, the project is supported by a coalition of public and private sector stakeholders. Notably, €35 million in financing will be provided by two prominent development finance institutions, underscoring the project’s credibility and alignment with sustainable development goals.

Benjamin Memmi, CEO of Axian Energy, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating:

This project marks a pivotal moment for Benin and for our shared mission: to make renewable energy accessible to as many people as possible. In collaboration with Sika Capital and the Beninese authorities, we are committed to delivering a project that will serve as a cornerstone for a more inclusive and resilient energy future.

Tchegnon Amoussou, Chairman of Sika Capital, highlighted the long-term commitment and groundwork that led to this milestone:

After five years of dedicated preparation in close coordination with the Government of Benin, local authorities, and the communities of Bohicon, Parakou, Djougou, and Natitingou, we are proud to announce the launch of Benin’s first independent renewable energy power producer. This project not only reflects Benin’s growing appeal for infrastructure investment but also demonstrates our shared commitment to expanding access to clean energy. We are thrilled to partner with Axian Energy to bring this vision to life.

The project represents a major step forward in Benin’s energy transition, combining environmental sustainability with economic development. By leveraging solar power, the initiative will reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions, and improve energy access for thousands of citizens.
