Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud-computing division of the company, has announced its plan to establish a development centre in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. This initiative will lead to the creation of job opportunities in fields such as software development, cloud support, and software engineering.
Kenya, often referred to as the “Silicon Savannah,” is a prominent technology hub in Africa, home to offices of global tech giants and a thriving ecosystem of startups.
Uwem Ukpong, the Vice President of Global Services at AWS, highlighted, “This centre will enable the local market to access a remarkable pool of technical talent.”
As the world’s largest provider of cloud computing services, AWS is utilized by renowned companies like Netflix, General Electric, and Sony, offering solutions for storage, networking, and remote security.
Kenya’s President William Ruto emphasized, “The Kenyan technology sector continues to be a source of growth and job creation at a time when there is so much uncertainty in the world.”
The announcement follows closely on the heels of Ruto’s visit to the United States, during which he extended invitations to American technology companies to set up operations and regional offices within Kenya.
In 2020, Amazon opened its first Amazon Web Services (AWS) datacentre in Africa located in Cape Town, South Africa. It also opened an office in Lagos, Nigeria in 2022.
Amazon Web Services is a subsidiary of Amazon that provides on-demand cloud computing platforms and APIs to individuals, companies, and governments, on a metered pay-as-you-go basis. These cloud computing web services provide distributed computing processing capacity and software tools via AWS server farms.
