Audiomack sets up shop in Nigeria

    0
By Staff Writer on July 24, 2020 Africa, News

Audiomack, a free music sharing and discovery platform, has opened shop in Nigeria. Its service is already available in all 54 countries in Africa.

Audiomack has already hired three people, who will be based in Nigeria but work on initiatives across the continent. Adeyemi Adetunji will be in charge operations and commercial partnerships while Charlotte Bwana will oversee on business development and media partnerships and Olive Uche will manage content strategy.

Founded in 2012 by Dave Macli and David Ponte, Audiomack reached 1.5 million daily active users across its mobile apps and site by January 2019.

In an email to Techcabal, David Ponte alluded to the fact that Nigeria is the sixth biggest country in the world and looking at majority English speaking countries, Nigeria is second after the United States. He added that “Since most of the artists we have are English speaking, it makes practical sense to see Nigeria as a growth opportunity both for Audiomack and all of the artists who upload their music to the platform.”

“The music streaming industry [in Nigeria] is in its nascent stage right now. There is a big opportunity for growth and adoption by a higher percentage of the population.” adds Ponte.

This statement is corroborated by PwC in its report; Entertainment and Media Outlook 2018-2022: An African perspective. According to the report, though Nigeria’s music scene is vibrant and generating healthy revenue
growth, barriers to growth include music piracy, high mobile data transmission costs, as well as low fixed-line broadband and smartphone
    penetration.

Audiomack is definitely entering into a saturated market with the likes of Transsion/NetEase’s Boomplay, MTN’s MusicTime, Apple Music, e.t.c.

I hope Audiomack has the right strategies to operate and win in Nigeria else it might go the same way like iroking and Spinlet.
