Instagram Threads is adding a coveted feature, drawing it into closer competition with X, formerly known as Twitter. The text-centric social networking app is currently testing a post-saving feature, enabling users to bookmark their favorite posts for later viewing.
Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, announced this feature in a Threads post on Wednesday, stating that a limited test had just begun.
Those involved in the test can find the new saving feature in the three-dot ‘More Options’ menu located in the top-right corner of a post. There’s no clear explanation as to why Threads tucked away this feature in the menu when Instagram has its bookmark icon readily accessible next to the like, comment, and share buttons. X lately moved its bookmark button on iOS to make it more noticeable. Threads will likely continue testing for the most efficient spot for this new save feature.
Given that Instagram has had a bookmarking function since 2016, it’s logical that Threads would integrate the feature as well. Saving content for later comes in handy when one wants to revisit a post, particularly one linking to a lengthy article when there’s insufficient time to read it immediately.
Since launching last year, Threads continuously unveils new features to attract users and compete with rivals like X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Nostr, Post, and Spill. Last month, the platform confirmed it was developing a “Trends” feature to highlight trending topics.
During Meta’s Q4 earnings report, Threads disclosed it has over 130 million monthly active users.
