Apple’s next generation iPhones are still some way off, but that hasn’t stopped the online rumour mill from serving up some details about the iPhone 11, or so-called iPhone XI lineup. Though what’s certain is that Apple is expected to make a big change this year when it introduces a refreshed line-up of iPhones in September.
More confirmation around the design of Apple’s iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max, and iPhone 11XR have appeared online in the form of leaked CAD documents showcasing the form of the new iOS powered smartphones. Those shocked at the ugly design cues being pushed by Apple hoping for any signs of change will be disappointed.
For Apple fans, that’s both good news and bad news. The good news is that hardcore Apple fans love to learn about what their favorite company is up to before anyone else. The bad news is that their favorite company might not be up to anything too impressive in 2019 when it comes to new iPhone hardware.
According to everything we’ve seen so far, these latest CAD images were first posted on SlashLeaks, and confirms a number of elements that have been discussed.
First of all, Apple is continuing to go with what will likely be the widest notch on a premium smartphone in 2019. While Android designers are working on innovative solutions including smaller notches, punch out holes, cameras that tuck inside the body of the smartphone, or that shoot through the display; Apple continues with the same obtrusive design that it ‘innovated’ in 2017.
Then there is the camera housing. Looking more like an induction cooker hob from Ikea than something from a company with a significant reputation for classic design, the multiple lenses and sensors are crammed together in an awkward square hub that is pushed into the top corner of the smartphone.
Thanks to the obsession with ‘thin’ the profusion is easily noticed, rather than being the cutting edge of fashion, Apple’s flagship iPhone is already associated with an #ugly design decision.
Finally, the port at the base of the unit follows the same design and styling as the lightning port of previous iPhone handsets. The beta releases of iOS 13 may feature USB-C – and the oval connector could squeeze in a USB-C connector – but it looks like the peripheral lock-in provided by the lightning port will continue.
Apple’s new iPhone 11 series is expected to launch in September just like all of Apple’s iPhones since the iPhone 4S, so we’ll see plenty more leaks before Apple finally makes the phones official.
