Apple has announced that it will be discontinuing HopStop services in October 2005. HopStop was founded by Nigerian Chinedu Echeruo and Apple bought it in 2013.
The website for HopStop displays a message that reads:
HopStop will no longer be available starting October 2015
Apple had already discontinued all but the iOS and web versions of HopStop’s apps. Though Apple does not offer any explanation, it is not unconnected with the new transit feature in iOS 9.
The transit feature in iOS 9 shows public transit information for subways, buses, trains, and ferries with lines and stations right on the map. The new Transit feature is customized for each city where it’s available — so signs on your screen will look the same as the ones on the street, and you’ll know exactly where the nearest subway station entrance is. Even Siri is available to assist you.
At launch transit directions will only be available for: Baltimore, MD; Chicago, IL New York City, NY; Philadelphia, PA; San Francisco, CA and Washington, DC in USA; China; London, England; Mexico City, Mexico; and Toronto, Canada;
iOS 9 will be available on the 16th of September 2015.
