Despite ongoing competition between smartphone giants, the importance of alliance cannot be overemphasized. Apple is presently in talks with Samsung to fix the burn-in issues on the Retina iPad mini. Burn-in is a permanent discoloration of areas on an electronic display caused by cumulative non-uniform usage of the pixels.
The result of this will be a delay in the launch of Apple’s new ipad mini. Apple needs to complete the production of 15 million panel displays to fulfill orders placed over the holiday season.
Negotiations were reopened to include Samsung, LG and Sharp as the primary suppliers of this panels. Negotiations fell through with Samsung leaving LG and Sharp to complete the orders but Apple dropped Sharp due to the IGZO substrate used on Sharp panels which results in a burn-in effect on the displays not visible to the naked eye which is nonetheless below Apple’s standards.
Sharp has failed to resolve the issues native to IGZO and has not been able to maintain a high production yield.
Presently, Apple has two options, the first is to upgrade the substrate to LTPS(Low temperature polysilicon) which eliminates the burn-in problem but will increase production costs and lower production capacity. the other is to fulfill the order with samsung who is a major competitor, so Apple has to choose whether to meet public demand or face production shortage.
